Profile
Sherri Carter is a contemporary landscape painter who would be classified as a "tonalist." Her elegant landscapes reveal an underlying emotion, simplified composition, neutral hues and understated subject matter. Sherri has a deep fondness for the outdoors which is revealed in her paintings, and the viewer can often feel the warm sunlight on the trail or the grasses blowing in the breeze.
Sherri graduated from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Design. She spent many years working as a graphic designer before embarking on a second career in fine art.
Sherri's first oil paintings in 2006 were inspired by the abstract impressionists. They were created purely from emotion and her imagination-there were no visual references or preliminary sketches. This series of "abstract landscapes" were filled with a great depth of field, bold luminous color, and compelling compositions.
Sherri's painting style continues to evolve with her current body of work. Her "tonal landscapes" are inspired by images from the northwest where she travels to paint on site with nature. Sherri's paintings showcase a warm, neutral palette and feature many layers of translucent glazes that give her atmospheric paintings a strong visual unity that has become a distinctive trademark of her work.
